Conference Theme: “Awakening the Power of Nonviolence”
“All life is interrelated. All … are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. …. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the inter-related structure of reality.”
-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Gandhi-King Conference on Peacemaking is a three day conference bringing together modern visionaries on nonviolence and social change with community leaders, activists, academics and organizers to train, learn, plan and organize to create a culture of liberation and justice for all. Participants will engage in:
• training and education in nonviolent theory and practice through tools to engage in social change.
• opportunities for networking and peer-to-peer learning with movement builders from all over the country.
• an entry point for community members to become engaged in movement work.
• involvement in working groups that will continue the work throughout the year.
• a nexus of people who are new to the movement and movement leaders to share and inspire action in a cross-cultural and inter-generational environment.
• the opportunity to learn about best practices and develop new ones based upon our shared experience.
Conference participants will end this transformational weekend in a better position to decide, strategically, where to put their energies for maximum effect and with concrete tools to use in their personal and social movement work.

Proposal Suggestions:
• Proposals offering practical tools and skills in areas such as community building, nonviolent communication, sustainability, nonviolent education, economic, social, and environmental justice, etc.
• Presenters who can offer hands-on workshops in appropriate movement- and community-building skills and/or deal spontaneously with specific concerns of activists and non-activist participants alike are particularly encouraged to apply.
• Presentations that incorporate stories, art, music, video, or photographic displays are encouraged.
• Proposals for paper presentations are welcome and will be presented in a poster session format.
• A unique opportunity to act as a “resource agent” is possible this year. This entails presenters offering their expertise in a working group session in addition to a traditional workshop. Topics of these working group sessions will be determined by conference participants on day one of the conference.
• Proposals for the 2009 Youth Conference are also being solicited. Proposals which give youth concrete peacemaking skills and tools are welcome. See website for more information about the Youth Conference.
Please note that a more limited number of proposals will be accepted this year.
