"We have inherited a large house, a great 'world house' in which we have to live together—black and white, Easterner and Westerner, Gentile and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, Moslem and Hindu—a family unduly separated in ideas, culture and interest, who, because we can never again live apart, must learn somehow to live with each other in peace."

- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Where Do We Go From Here:
Chaos or Community
, 1967

OVERVIEW

The 2008 two day conference is entitled "Continuing the Dream...Constructing the World House". The conference will focus on practical ways we can each build the 'World House' that Dr. King referred to as the next step in creating the Beloved Community. Our house will be built on three pillars; nonviolence, social justice, and community building. All plenary speakers, workshops, paper presentations, dialogue sessions, panel discussions, and film presentations will fall under one of these pillars.

Possible topics under each pillar include but are not limited to:

  • NONVIOLENCE: Personal, Political, Social, and Spiritual Nonviolence
  • SOCIAL JUSTICE: Environmental, Economic, and Racial Justice
  • COMMUNITY BUILDING: Nonviolent Communication, Dialogue Processes, and Multiculturalism

YOUTH COMPONENT

The Gandhi-King Conference will again bring local high school youth an innovative and interactive youth component which will occur on Friday of the conference weekend. Friday morning will begin with a plenary address by Reverend Lennox Yearwood, President of the Hip Hop Caucus, followed by two workshop sessions specifically designed for the youth.

The youth component continues Friday evening with a reception and community performance event during which artists will be sharing their messages of peace and visions of Beloved Community through music, spoken word, visual art, and dance. Students are welcome to join us for the duration of the conference weekend, providing a unique opportunity for intergenerational learning and sharing.
